That's not what I proposed. First of all, i didn't propose anything.
Uhhh... I didn't say you did....

I took that (and your subsequent paragraphs) to imply that you thought 3 threads was too many. Apologies if I misunderstood.

I was correcting myself - sorry that didn't come through. I said 'that's not what I proposed' and then I realized I had made a deal over not-proposing, and so I was ragging on myself there.

Well, I do. I do think the "quotables" should all be combined, and so I do think we can do with 2 FF threads, rather than three. The "FF Spoilers" name just itches me, and I see potential trouble, if/when there ever are movie spoilers, because not all the UK people are going to want to read those, but apparently, that's just me. So I'll be shutting up about it now.
I understand the movie spoiler concern. However, I suspect that by the time there are any movie spoilers to share, the DVDs will have been out for some time so that the
only
spoilers left will be movie-related ones.
If traffic is not the problem, what is? Is there, in fact, a technical argument against thread proliferation or reorganization? I feel like we (the non-techy we) have sort of gotten the idea that we can't have too many threads because the increased post volume will crash the database; is this the case, or not?
It appears that the problem is not traffic, per se, but server load. Apparently we have plenty of bandwidth, which means we wouldn't be having any problems if our pages were static html pages. The problem is that almost all of our pages make calls to the database where the posts are stored. It's the calls to the database that were swamping the system, especially since it seems the connections weren't closing properly. Increasing the number of posts also increases the number of calls to the database.
I'm not sure that the number of threads is the problem, but rather the increase in posting that generally accompanies new threads.
Jon - I get that. I guess I'd just like to see our names more reflect thread content. When the DVDs are out and people have gotten a chance to watch them, we'll only need one thread. If at some time, there are movie spoilers and we need a thread for it, we can create one. I just don't get holding onto the spoilers title. But really, what's important is what we can post where, and this isn't a substantive change. I just figured we should make more sense.
I do think that maybe it's a good idea to pull discussion of a general TV thread until we've figured out what we're going to do with the rest of the boards, but that's up to Raquel.
But Cindy, they are NAFDA spoilers. As indicated in the Firefly thread slug.
Right, ita, but keeping it named Firefly Spoilers, while a true description of the thread, is not an accurate description of what's going on in the thread. Changing the name would allow other Brits who come by to know where to go for discussion. Admittedly this is not a condition that will last long, but you see my point? If we were to rename a thread, it would be to more accurately reflect what's going on in the thread.
Speaking just for myself, I wouldn't mind having LotR folded into Movies.
I know LJ and DX feel differently, but sepaking for myself, I would not mind LotR being folded into Movies. Of course, LotR discussion is going to utterly take over movies once the DVDs and the last chapter start, but that will fade back into normal movie discussion by this time next year. (until the last DVDs come out, but the increased traffic then will not quite be the same).
As for other thread combinations, I (as a Farscape devotee) would not object to Farscape being combined with something else to create a sort of categorized TV thread (sci-fi, maybe) so that some of our threads become more general, but still retain much of their flavor, if that would help.
Kat suggested in lightbulb these sorts of categorized discussion, and maybe that's something we should look at, instead of all these non-ME show-specific threads, we widen those threads a little bit, sci-fi for genre discussions of shows, and perhaps a HoYay thread for shows like Due South and Smallville (maybe, just tossing out ideas here, people).

I see this point, but if it's not a Spoiler thread, we have at least two definitions of spoiler running around the board.
That's my contention, my sole one.
I think LoTR should have its own thread, there's enough volume on those movies alone to warrant a separate thread. And because I don't really want to read that much about LotR to find out what people think of the new Clive Owen flick.
(And I'm no Angus, I liked the movies.)

That's a valid point, considering the brouhaha that's cropped up over our definitions of spoilers in the recent past.
(Edited because I was talking to ita, not Sue, although Sue has a point, too)
