Works for me. It's been a while since I checked in there. I especially like the possibility of re-opening when and if The Hobbit movie comes to pass.
It seems reasonable to me to close LotR now and reopen if and when Hobbit comes to pass.
I don't know if there's any point thinking of a specific event...whatever happens that's going to make a lot of chatter should qualify -- a whole new DVD set with lots of new material, or whatever.

Yeah, closing it now makes sense to me. Was good while it lasted but now even the natter has moved away.
