Voting Discussion: We're Screwing In Light Bulbs AIFG!

We open it up, we talks the talk, we votes, we shuts it down. This thread is to free up Bureaucracy for daily details as we hammer out the Big Issues towards a vote. Open only when a proposal has been made and seconded according to Buffista policy (Which we voted on!). If this thread is closed, hie thee to Bureaucracy instead!

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

So the whitefont problems remain, then?

eta: nevermind, too tangential.

Bag the crypto. Say what is on your mind.

I'm guessing there's a distinction between watching and posting and discussing.

The distinction to me is that the charter of the thread is watch-n-post, meaning that if someone has a thoughtful dissertation on last week's Lost to post, and it gets embedded in the middle of a flurry of Veronica Mars posts, sobeit.

If two postable shows are on at the same time, I think the interested parties will be able to sort out the entries that interest them.

How so?

Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be.

I think an actual watch and post thread would be Bad News, and I'm not even a person who craves Serious Discussion. Just because watch and post is pretty inherently goofy. It's all "OMG!" "Wait, what did he say?"

At any rate, all of this discussion is tangential to the actual proposal before us, but that doesn't make it a bad thing. Says the person who, every so often, wants us to have the big bad Who Are We, And Where Are We Going discussion.

I also just want to point out that I really like our decision-making process, because it only takes a few people to suggest something, but it takes a lot more people to make it happen, or not.

Then a watch-n-post thread serves to remove this sort of discussion from places where it is not wanted. However, The watch-n-posts for the debates, for example, were very entertaining, as was the post-show analysis that occurred after watch-n-posts for Buffy and Angel.

What is even happening?

I don't understand how watch-n-post would work. What happens if I'm talking Daily Show while ita is talking Jack and Bobby? It will get confusing and spoilerific. I think, thanks to Maritime Canada, North America has 5 time zones, and we have Euros and Antipodeans, too. I think it would be messy, and more trouble than it's worth. If people want to flesh out the hows of it, I'd be interested, but think maybe we should let Lyra get through this proposal, first.

...

(Lyra, it was funny in my head, too.)

Our path has broadened and narrowed with the landscape. I don't think TV is the only, or even the biggest/most important part of us. Particular-TV was our meeting ground.

That said, us talking about adding a thread for a sci-fi/fantasy show that 50 something of us picked out of a long list, in a poll, where only 100ish voted--a show which has David Fury on the writing staff--doesn't feel so much like a leap, or a turn or anything, other than having a thread for something a good amount of us are interested in.

I do think people vote for a lot of threads because they are excited about not having to read about X or not having to read Y person anymore in a thread they are in.

For me, that's not it. I enjoy both focused and non-focused discussion. Right now for me, b.org is mostly a non-focused discussion destination (for those topics which I want to discuss with Buffistas). My desire for focused discussion has not one thing to do with wanting to thread nanny anyone out of Natter, or not wanting to read or post with whomever. It's easier for me to keep up with focused discussion, in a dedicated space. I can't think of a semi-regular Buffista who doesn't say something that intrigues and interests me, at one time or another--particularly in focused discussion.

I think I'm going to vote "present" (or whatever we do here on to satisfy minimum vote total) on the O.C. thread, if it ends up on the ballot. I don't watch the show. I am seeing OC watchers post here that it doesn't merit a thread, but only a handful. OC talk doesn't harsh my mellow in Natter, but I don't know enough about it, to vote against a thread, either. I'll let the OC watchers who care, vote on that one.

In the poll, I chose Lost, JoA, and Veronica Mars. I don't watch that last one, but the premise of it, and the posts I have read about it, made me wonder if it wasn't an our-kind-of-show-show. Thanks to the poll, it's pretty clear to me that it is not. I voted for it instead of both The Daily Show, and 24, despite the fact that I watch and love both, because I am not convinced they fit us. Having threads for either of those shows would have felt (to me) like actual change (as opposed to a Lost thread). I also chose VM instead of Alias, because my memory of Alias watchers' opinions is that they didn't want a thread. I dithered over this for a moment, because I think UDrew is writing for that show now, but decided against it.

As it stands right now, I am only inclined to vote in favor of a Lost thread. I would have no problem with waiting 'til after sweeps, but at this point, to prolong it any further would make for more annoyance, I think. I'll vote for it, enjoy it if it is opened, and not mourn it, if it doesn't get opened.

I think I'll vote to close all the threads on the table for closure. I am happy with either closing Angel spoilers, or making it a general spoilers thread, or a repurposing Angel spoilers for whatever else (but I'd like to end and start fresh, for organizational purposes, if we choose one of those courses).

(Okay, I might edit a bunch of this out. I've been interrupted while trying to go over it--about five times. I've just got to post it, and get it off my screen.)

Bag the crypto. Say what is on your mind.

I'm down with a Lost thread, but I don't think it will address all the issues that have cropped here.

I am guessing that people other than myself have gone into Natter and seen that it is all about a show they are not watching, and had some difficulty wedging their off-current-topic item into the flow.

(not really here, running out the door)

Also, WatchNPost is really only useful for east-coasters. I've never yet participated in a watch-and-post. Not that I could, as my computer is in a different room than the tv.

Not that that actually addresses the issue in question, about which I have no opinion.

Trust my rage

I think that happens all the time - at least to me. But I always figured that part of the democracy of the board is that stuff gets talked about depending on interest at the moment, not necessarily interest in the topic.

I can see the benefit of Watch-n-Post, only in that it takes the conversation out of Natter. When I lived in Mountain Time, I always felt stupid posting my Angel OMG moments when it was old news to those who had been reading the board.

Getting back to the original topic, Lovesick has now convinced me that having a Lost thread or whatever else we chose is a good thing. Lovesick served a need existing when we created it and now it's harming no one by just sitting there.

How are you me? You need to stop that. Only I can be me. ~Kara

I am an east-coaster, and yet,

I've never yet participated in a watch-and-post. Not that I could, as my computer is in a different room than the tv.

This is me.

I'd vote for a Lost thread. I like talking about any show I watch (more often reading what others have to say) the next day, and trying to find the topic in Natter can be frustrating. Then, if I want to say something about it, I feel like I'm interrupting the flow of whatever else is going on at the moment, so I don't.

I also think Dead Like Me is our kind of show and would sustain some interesting discussion, but I, regretfully, feel there are two reasons it wouldn't be a good thread choice. I don't think enough people watch it, and it's only 13 episodes a year, which are almost over until this next summer assuming it's picked up again.
