Voting Discussion: We're Screwing In Light Bulbs AIFG!
We open it up, we talks the talk, we votes, we shuts it down. This thread is to free up Bureaucracy for daily details as we hammer out the Big Issues towards a vote. Open only when a proposal has been made and seconded according to Buffista policy (Which we voted on!). If this thread is closed, hie thee to Bureaucracy instead!
I'd say that people who don't want to be spoiled for a show should avoid the thread until they've seen it.
I'm anti general TV because of the volume issues -- I think we're spending money we don't quite have.
My pragmatic objection is wondering at the use of a thread that's very whitefonted, or unavailable to me because I'm always time-shifted on one show or another.
However, we may be veering offtopic, unless Betsy wants to change her proposal in this direction.

Yeah, if it's All Whitefont, All The Time, I'm personally not going to go to the trouble..
Boxed Set doesn't whitefont much, and that seems to work okay. Limited number of shows, though.
I just got techno-bunnied about an idea that a thread might filterable by topic, building on the recent filter work. I could select a "The Shield" view of a thread, for instance, and not have to get any "The Bachelor Might Be Gay" on my eyes.
I'd say that people who don't want to be spoiled for a show should avoid the thread until they've seen it.
And if it were just a one TV show per thread thing, I could see that. But, if this turns out to be a general TV thread, there are going to be very few hours in the day when West Coasters or people who taped can frequent the thread. I can't go in to talk about the QaF that I just watched because there's a non-whitefonted discussion of the Alias that doesn't air for another two hours here.
Out of curiosity, am I the only one who thinks Boxed Set doesn't work very much for them as a user? I regret my proposal to combine them and would take it back if I could.
That's my fear of a general TV thread. And even themed ones. That they will still be too unweildy.
Out of curiosity, am I the only one who thinks Boxed Set doesn't work very much for them as a user?
No, although it sounds like it's for different reasons than yours -- I stopped reading boxed set when the SV discussion devolved into nothing but "this show sucks", because the other shows discussed there don't interest me.
I've always suspected that if it were a general thread, it would interest me more rather than less: I could treat it more like the movies thread, which I don't read all the time for time reasons, but there's enough variety that I can dip in when I have time, or go see if there's something up there if there's a movie I want to talk about. With BS, I know I'm not ever going to be interested in talking dS or SG, so I don't even look in anymore.
So I'll throw the question back out, in a different form: am I the only for whom movies works, and Boxed Set doesn't? Any thoughts on why?
(And, again, this may be off-topic for this specific discussion, but general tv thread or not is something that obviously wants to get discussed sometime.)
Movies doens't work for me, either, Amych.
I think it has to do with my brain being single focused and wanting to discuss X right NOW and not wade through stuff to get there. Same reason Literary doesn't work quite right either. I want discussion, not just, I read X what did you think?
I can't see the movies analogy working for my usage of a TV thread. It's reasonably easy for me to scroll back to the start of the have-seen-Troy discussion and read what I missed. But not easy enough to always do it.
Dropping in to talk about last week's Alias? Never gonna do it. The positioning will make it impractical. And I can't even highlight
all
the whitefont, because I know I haven't seen Murphy's Law yet, so I'm skipping from post to post, highlighting as I go.
It seems at best a resource hog, at worst hard to navigate.
Boxed doesn't bother me one way or another. There's just not much to talk about in there -- Farscape and Due South are not running regularly, the Smallville fans have altered the way they look at the show -- nothing catches fire there. However, if Smallville were better and all the shows in the header were on the air, it'd be fine -- but I'd also think it'd be at the upper end of how many shows one thread could support.
I was actually about to withdraw the recs thread suggestion, as the consensus is it isn't useful. If somebody wants to propose a general TV thread, I'll second, though.
I'm glad to see Betsy withdrawing the recs thread idea.
I personally hate the idea of the general tv thread as well, but that's because while I agree with amych on this:
I've always suspected that if it were a general thread, it would interest me more rather than less: I could treat it more like the movies thread
In my case, that translates to not bothering with the thread at all, anymore than I bother with the music thread. The General Blankety Blank Threads just don't interest me.
