We had about 100 in Old Forge, which is a tiny Adirondack community, so impressive. Lots of beeping, thumbs up, peace signs, and onlookers cheering. Tourists were almost all supportive, with some blank stares, and a tiny number of thumbs down and obscene gestures. We cheered and waved at them like we assumed they were with us. Considering that the library was too late to have it listed as an official gathering, and it relied solely on word of mouth and some FB posts by locals, it was a success.
eta: it was scheduled 3-4 and that was pretty much when everyone gathered and dispersed.
We had a bigger crowd than last time, including folks in costumes, and my parents’ Rep was one of the speakers (I live in a different district) and was pretty fiery, so that was nice. By the time we got past all the people who were already standing and waving on the sidewalk street we only had about half an hour on the main drag, but good response from everyone driving by.
Oh, and someone was handing out little bottles of bubbles, so that was a nice addition
Supportive honking has been achieved; the crowd was smaller than last time, but they were enthusiastic. A few inflatable frogs and unicorns, who were big hits with the kids. I'm looking forward to seeing crowd shots from Oakland and SF; word of mouth was that a lot of folks went to the bigger events, which might help explain the decrease here.
I already had other plans with my sister. She sort of wondered aloud about going, but in the end we just drove by one of the local groups and made supportive noises and gestures. Still, my formerly Republican sister even thinking about going to one of these is a huge step. As we drove by she commented on how many older people there were, and how considerate people were being of the ones with walkers. I think if there’s a third one, I might be able to get her to go with me. Otherwise, I’ll just go myself. But not knowing anyone there makes it a little intimidating for me. There were probably 300 people in the one we passed, and we were not in a major city.
Pretty impressive, Calli!
Forgot about the “goths for Prop 50” (the redistricting thing) spotted as we were leaving. Very well dressed.
