I see what you mean, meara. According to what I'm seeing, both ways for the verb are right, but what you suggest is the most common.

Thank you for the birthday wishes. It was very rainy but The Math Greek was here so I was happy to just hang out and watch movies.
I did briefly lament the lack of corn muffins in the house, but I really don't eat chili with carbs anymore.
