I got more detail on mom's surgery (why they are doing it, not when it is happening which we still don't know). They put her in a splint at the ER, so they took that off and put her in a cast and while that was still soft the ortho kind of squeezed her bones into a better position (I couldn't quite picture that, but it's how both my sister and mother described it), then x-rayed through the cast and they all looked at the images. Mom could see that her wrist did not look right, and the surgeon asked her about what she did with her hands, which is when she mentioned the sewing and quilting which she really wants to be able to keep up and my sister brought up gardening. So the surgeon said that because of her age they had thought to avoid surgery (Mom is 83, 84 in November) but after talking to her he thought it was an okay wrist as she is strong and has no signs of dementia. They'll put in a plate, which I cannot picture how that will work but (I had forgotten this) my brother had the same surgery 35 years ago and has had no problems with his wrist or fingers or anything since. Presumably, if anything, they'll be better at it now than back then. So looking good for Mom! She and my sister are frustrated by not being able to plan when to arrange for additional support for the surgery (if we even need to do that, but sister and niece are both talking about coming down to help) and haven't heard from the actual therapists who will be making the regular home visits yet, but have done the initial assessments and intake stuff for both PT and OT. The rail the PT recommended we get will definitely not work with their new adjustable bed (which is the cause of all this, really), we may or may not look for something that will (it's wanted as more of a grabber bar than a safety rail)

They've been very good about that, yes!

I have 90% decided not to fast this year - my sister is heading home Monday morning and my brother is getting here in the afternoon so I'm going to bridge the gap (mostly needed so my mom isn't left alone in the house while my dad ferries people to and from BART) and really if I'm spending the day with people who aren't also fasting why bother. But glad I already took the day off work!

Yeah, 53 years ago today I decided "Anything but the fuckin' boat," and have paid every day, since. But every birthday I have beats the first one, too, I guess. Personally, I do hate Frank Burns, but I prefer hating him because the reasons feel so much more real to me than making fun of Charles Winchester(Was he a III, maybe, right) Margaret and Frank are probably the ones that taught me what an affair is, but they also didn't make it look good either so that probably saved my parents some time. Mexican food for birthday lunch. I love the ones with Sidney Freedman.

I think I'm going to need pho for dinner. My throat is still sore, which I expected, and pho is perfect for a sore throat. In fact, it would be medical self-negligence if I *didn't* get pho.

My MASH update is that it continues to be the perfect show to binge-watch while I'm loopy on the combo of opioids and muscle relaxers.
