Thanks for that, megan.
Natter 78: I might need to watch some Buffy for inspiration

Thanks for the info Megan! I just finished the process for a 401k loan to get my mom's debt under control so I'm reluctant to tinker with anything else at the moment, but once things stabilize under that new setup I may look into moving some portion into a less tech-dependent fund so I don't end up helping fund Musk's speedrun into the Kessler Syndrome.
Just copied your post and sent to Bob to read, megan. Our retirement accounts have been doing pretty well (& we only have the mortgage, debtwise, at the moment) but I’m stressing out about it all going poof as work has been increasingly harder for me to come by and the years pass. I need to be looking at all that shiz more strategically.
Hard to hate the bubble when it makes me 401K look so fat at the moment, and wouldn’t want to miss out on gains but goodness there must be a burst of bubble at some point here.
Yeah, that's the thing. Or, why I still have almost half in stocks. That's why I came up with this "gambling winnings" strategy where I basically view my stock funds as a set amount and anything they earn over time are my winnings and I periodically pocket those. I may be missing out on gains but if there's a huge fall I'm mitigating losses. And, more importantly, I'll have money on hand to buy the dip. "Buy low, sell high!" I think Berkshire Hathaway is more than 50% cash/bonds at this point and I figure what's good enough for Warren Buffet is good enough for me.
what's good enough for Warren Buffet is good enough for me.
Sound thinking
Aurelia you had the fermented shark?? You are a brave and trusting human, my goodness.
Just enough to say I tried it. It smelled terrible, but the taste was just fishy.
I hadn’t checked my balance in a while, so I just did.
I’m a millionaire. Huh.
Yeah, I was concerned that our financial advisor was going to buy into the AI hype, but he reassured us. Also, we're getting closer to retirement age so we're more and more conservative strategy-wise.
I’m a millionaire.
Nice. Just 999,999 million more and you'll be a trillionaire.

Even The Math Greek, who is very pro-AI (ETA: and space exploration) in general, looked at me like I had three heads when I asked if he was going to buy any SpaceX. Like me, he knows better than to buy individual stocks, but I thought he might buy some just for fun.
Congrats, Tom! I keep getting fed these "is a million $s enough to retire?" articles and I don't read them because I'm nowhere close to that. I'm guessing in NY it probably is not, even if we don't assume that the answer is not generally "no". . . Still seems like a nice milestone.
