"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

My FB memories were a dueling rollercoaster charting the 2020 and 2024 elections, which was exhausting.

But surveying the election results this morning was cheering. I'm checking my hopes on the midterms just because I think Trump will have a year to try to ratfuck the election but there does seem to be an effective strategy now to pin anti-Trump with pocketbook pragmatism.

Also, big surprise, all the Latino voters who went for Trump are not fans for ICE raids.

The best part about the Mamdani's election was the turnout by young voters, who were unenthused by by the Dem gerontocracy.

I think Newsom's aggressive turn towards countering GOP disenfranchisement also was welcomed as people were frustrated by Dems "playing fair" and getting stabbed repeatedly in the back.

In both cases, it's a turn away from Dems trying to appeal to political norms. In all the wins, there was a focus on practical issues.

I really want to see a Dem platform that runs on: eliminating the Electoral college, and expanding the Supreme Court and aggressively taxing billionaires.

Today I learned Dick Cheney died a few days ago. So yeah I guess he is irrelevant now.

Matthew and I finally put our bed frame together. And it is always angsty when we do stuff like that. I'm bad at reading diagrams and he is good at it but he has a bad back so I always do most of the work. And then trying to communicate comes down to him telling me stuff and me trying to understand or him helping but he is telling me not to tighten the screws right away. But it got done. And we got the mattress on and I was reading something about how long to let it decompress and I read that you should unbox the mattress within three days of getting it but definitely not let it sit for more than 2 weeks because it can cause structural issues. Or something. And it's been about 2 weeks. Also I accidentally got queen size sheets .

But we went to the comic book store and to dinner and then to get another set of sheets.

What we didn't do was go vote. But the only thing on our ballot was the mayor who ran unopposed and city council and the info I got on the candidates they all pretty much said the same thing about what they would do.

Meara....I think it's a situation of ...oh well the people I know are different, should be treated differently than the rest of the unwashed masses..

I have a coworker and friend who I am trying to put some distance between us because she is totally unhappy with a situation of her own making but she seems convinced that she is being screwed over by the managers. She isn't . She took a transfer/promotion and immediately hated it. A week after she started she was pushing for an exception to transfer back. And she keeps wanting to get another exception to transfer out to another promotion and it's not happening. Partly due, I think, the store and HR manager being busy because we are short 3 management positions.

I've been kind I've been direct but not mean. And she gets defensive. I know she sees a therapist so I've told her she should talk to her therapist about this and I sent her info about Radical Acceptance. What I haven't directly said because it would be really mean is "I'm pretty sure the whole issue is you and your attitude now and the fact that EVERYONE told you not to transfer to that store AND to wait longer than a week. Just learn to deal with the consequences of your actions".

Good luck with that! People hate that lesson.

Here's something I definitely would have gotten for Jacqueline: [link]

"already on the kiss-cam with Karl Marx"-

I saw an all-feline Nativity somewhere last week, but even my agnostic self rejected it as something of a bridge too far. But I did say "aw!" though, at the risk of being a single-lady cliche.(Also, I'm not feeling like "fa-la-laing,' right now! This year has...kind of been a bastard...I've had worse, but maybe I need a moment.(or is that people giving the old year the bum's rush, like flicking the lights in restaurants...or are the weird elfin people just such cash cows, the man just hopes we go along...what's that about?) And I'm not on the Grinch spectrum with my mother, but it's hard to swing into that when the AC comes on sometimes and we haven't made a Turkey Day list yet.

this mess was yours / now your mess is mine

I love pictures of weird Nativity sets!

Also, I'm not feeling like "fa-la-laing,' right now!

I can't even think about the holidays. My brain has no room for them. (Although I was at Trader Joe's today and they already have their oat nog back, so of course I bought some.)

Oh and so I haven't really mentioned this to anyone . Well Matthew knows but no one else. Walmart covers degrees of certain kinds. It used to be much more broad but they removed a lot of certificates and degrees and I actually can't see all the offerings because it's been so long since I've attempted college I have to do the college prep stuff first.

And I have done that. Very slowly. I'm still at the very beginning where it's just introducing concepts of a syllabus, how to register for classes etc. And I don't know if I'll want to study any of the actual offerings but you know I keep thinking it might be nice to get a degree of some kind just to do it.
