The artist formerly associated with cupcakes.

Dad celebrated his bday yesterday by getting into a FB smackdown with close-minded "Christians" from his hometown, saying [paraphrased] that they need to reread the bible, and that Jesus and G-D would disapprove of their actions. Don't argue with aggressively lapsed Catholics who went to SF for the Summer of Love. They can quote the bible, explain freedom of religion, and read you for filth.

In the end it's only ever been one step, and then the next.

I did like your dad, when I met him.

If you're going through hell/keep on going/don't slow down/keep your fear from showing/you might be gone/'fore the devil even knows you're there

My first(?) Covid vaccine is scheduled for Thursday. My oldest son spent the entire day on it, even though I told him to stop and that I'd try CVS early again in the morning. It's in Southie, which I don't know at all, but am happy to learn.

Me too! I got in somehow this morning when Walgreen's released a bunch of slots. They're doing 1b+, which in Illinois means certain comorbidities qualify. So while my history of PE and DVT blood clots don't get me in, my chonkiness does. I tried to get an appointment for my sister right after and the whole system had crashed, so we'll keep trying for her.

They scheduled a second shot a month out, and the rumor I'm hearing is Moderna, but I'll take what they give me and like it.

Fandom means never having to say "But where would I wear that?"

Timelies all!

I'm so sorry, msbelle.

'we all walk this earth feeling we are frauds. The trick is to be grateful and hope the caper doesn't end any time soon"

I can't begin to say how much it cheers me to come here and hear more Buffistas are getting vaxed up.

Yeah my sister and BIL got theirs today and my BFF gets hers tomorrow. Somehow Washington is still nowhere near those tiers, so I’m very relieved to have done the volunteer thing. I’m supposed to get my second shot next week.

Also, v annoyed at my body for having so many headaches this month. January was nearly headache free it felt like, but Feb/March have been awful. I do normally feel like they’re seasonal, and my meds do usually help thank god, but still. Obnoxious. Also I really want a massage.

"I'm useless alone." // "We're all useless alone. It's a good thing you're not alone."

I have a massage scheduled for Thursday, which is 2 weeks after my first shot. Very exciting.

I must obey the inscrutable exhortations of my soul—Calvin and Hobbs

I’m sorry, msbelle.

I got an automated phone call from my county’s COVID line. I was excited at first, but then I realized they were just calling to let me know my request to be notified when I could get vaccinated had gone through. It wasn’t the notification itself. I’m not really expecting to hear until April, but it was still disappointing.

Good Trouble and Righteous Fights

Has anyone here tried Noom? I'm looking for something that will kick-start me toward my goal of losing 15 lbs by late summer (so I'll be securely under the maximum weight range to sign up for a horseback tour when we're in Glacier NP) and eventually lose 20-30 lbs and keep it off, but not to be too judgy about the fact that I'm not willing to do the sheer level of self-deprivation it would take to lose the 70 lbs or so it would take to get into the so-called healthy BMI range. Noom sounds good in podcast ads, but things are SUPPOSED to sound appealing and sane in ads.

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

Our mayor has announced that they got a big shipment of J&J vax in, so that should help accelerate it in SF. I'm ready to jump on the opportunity as soon as it presents itself.

Side note: There was good news on the Pfizer vax being very effective against the Brazil variant. (which like the South African variant, is a little trickier than the UK).

I know some people who are extremely pessimistic about things getting back to normal any time soon, but I'm looking at the science and the numbers and I think it'll happen within the next three or so months, depending on the rest of the vax rollout.

A lot of people seem freaked by the variants (which are, admittedly, more transmissible), but the vax are all effective against mortality with them, even if some of the variants are causing mild or moderate symptoms.

I think a lot of people expect vax (or science!) to be some exactitude, or binary state of Safe/Unsafe. But it's a probabilistic model and strategy. Most of the people who get vaxed will be almost entirely safe from serious illness and mostly safe from even mild symptoms or transmitting it further.

That plus the people who've already had it (which they calculate is 3X more than tested positive) means they're going to get to the herd immunity point this summer.

I try to keep in mind that the 1918 Pandemic - for which there was NO vaccine - still ran its course in about 18 months. (with, of course, massive fatalities)
