Illyria: We cling to what is gone. Is there anything in this life but grief? Wesley: There's love. There's hope...for some. There's hope that you'll find something worthy...that your life will lead you to some joy...that after everything...you can still be surprised. Illyria: Is that enough? Is that enough to live on?

All sorrows can be borne if you put them into a story. Tell me a story.

JZ, hooray for good sleep!

Oof, Shrift. I'm glad you're employed, but... yeah.

I've been fortunate when it comes to grandparents. I'm the oldest child of young parents, who were also each the oldest child. I knew all my grandparents and one great-grandparent and didn't lose a grandparent until I was in my 20s. I have one 96-yr-old grandmother still living. I need to figure out a time to visit her since my Christmas trip was cancelled.

So glad you're still employed, shrift! My brother is still employed as well, but yikes.

Happy to hear you are getting good sleep, JZ!

I worked through dinner tonight because it was work I could do and was something specific and confined that just required a bunch of research, and it was so pleasant compared to so much of what I do now. Don't be a supervisor, people! Sigh.

I'm glad you're still employed, shrift - and also sorry it's rough.

So glad you're feeling better, JZ. I hope your people can tweak the cocktail successfully quickly.

Fell asleep at 8p. Now I'm up. Yippee.

I must obey the inscrutable exhortations of my soul—Calvin and Hobbs

I’m glad you’re feeling better, JZ. It’s hard to overestimate the value of sleep.

I’m feeling like traveling—it’s been years since I’ve gone anywhere but to visit family. While this year might just be a jaunt to the NC mountains, I’m thinking Montreal might be nice for my next non-family airplane trip. Has anyone been there? It looks fun.

Our wings are not tired.

Truth. It's good to hear you got some of the good stuff, JZ.

I'm sorry things are so disruptive, shrift. Ugh.

Kiddos are back in NY. The visit went very well.

"I remember when they eventually introduced that drug kingpin who murdered people and smuggled drugs inside snakes and I was like 'Finally. A normal person.'” —RahvinDragand

Both of my grandfathers died before I was born (my maternal grandfather when Mom was 5, so she barely had a chance to know him), but my grandmothers lived until I was in college so I feel fortunate to have had many good years with them.

I'm the baby of my generation on Mom's side of the family, just a few years older than the most senior of my once-removed cousins. On Dad's side I'm the 4th oldest among the currently living, and expect that #2 will probably outlive me.

The fun and novelty of snow days have definitely worn off.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

I'm only starting to find out who all is gone, so it's been chaotic.

This was me on Wednesday. And obviously HR can't release confidential employment details but with everyone being remote we can't *see* who's gone, and also I run an operations team so most of my past week has been figuring out who is left who knows how to *do all the things*.

(We were told on the "sorry we're shutting down your entire business unit" call to "take the rest of the day off" and one of my colleagues asked "What about the books that are supposed to come out tomorrow, do we still need to release those" and Big Boss was like "Oh right...I meant finish your work and then take the rest of the day off." My dude I don't know if you know this but finish your work and then stop for the day is just how a regular work day goes, so that is less of a gift than you seem to think.)

There is a sunbeam on my face! I don't know how many gray days in a row that was, but it was enough that the path of the sun now puts morning light on a place where I can sit (if I lean a little to the left) instead of just skimming the windowsill and a bookshelf. Welcome back, orb!
