I always thought the name Serenity had a vaguely funereal sound to it.

"There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea."

Plus they can’t even swear in the new House members or vote on anything else until they have a speaker. So nothing is getting done.

I must obey the inscrutable exhortations of my soul—Calvin and Hobbs

I'm sorry, sj.

I think they will be! I mean, if no one can whip the votes to become Speaker, they aren't going to be able to pass anything that anyone disagrees on at all.

I think if they pass anything, it'll be by bowing down to the extreme right members of their party. Which means whatever they pass will die in the Senate.

About the only thing likely to get done in the next two years is confirming judges, since I believe that's mostly a Senate thing.

Remember that the frontier of the Rebellion is everywhere. And even the smallest act of insurrection pushes our lines forward.

As David alluded to while back in the thread, in the last Congress there were 15 Special Elections to fill vacant seats, and the Dems only need to flip 5 or 6 of them to get a majority. And once George Santos gets kicked out and/or arrested, the Democrats are very likely to flip his seat. And the more incompetent the Republicans look, the easier it will be to flip several more seats.

Picking up from way back:

What I need is a tool that will suck the rigid inflexibility out of pharmacists.

I feel that, properly employed, the Uproot could still be the right tool for this job.

Fandom means never having to say "But where would I wear that?"

Timelies all!

Today was a little better, if only because he was with the nanny until 6.(I had a virtual therapy session at 5) Right now he's having difficulty settling down for bed.

Thrive to spite them

I guess if the Dems could find a few GOP to flip they could have the Speaker of the House ..that is how it works right ? The person with the majority?

I don't think they could get them to flip their vote but it would be some what amusing.

Best of luck, Sheryl.

It's suddenly ferociously windy here: it's so loud it kind of sounds like an engine outside.

In an excess of optimism I'm going to make this tonight to have for book club tomorrow: [link]

Doesn't that look great? I'm very excited.

"You can't put a price on the joy of not giving a shit." -Zenkitty

I feel like I should tell Sophia that, for dinner tonight, I made an attempt at cabbage stuffed with filling that I'd layer in a lasagna. It was delicious.

Doesn't that look great?

It dooooo.

What is even happening?

I have never heard of this Uproot before. It sounds like a miracle.

I adore all you motherfuckers so much -- PMM.

Walking cancelled tonight on account of inclement weather and local power outage.  I'm fine -- I have candles and batteries and blankets and plenty of food and water.  I'm just having a little camp-out in my apartment. Feeling very close to the spirit of my maternal grandmother, who used to weather storms like this every winter out on the Point Reyes peninsula in my youth. (Forty years ago!)
