We had our (post) Independence Day BBQ/Party at lunch today. I'm on the committee, and ran a few of the games. Considering I never walked more than a hundred yards at a time, I am friggin exhausted...and I can't leave until 4:30...
Hope nobody needs anything difficult for the rest of the day...
Timelies all!
My parents are in town for the weekend. Mr. S's birthday is tomorrow, and his party is Sunday. Wish me luck...
Spencer's was Coming Soon, Atropa!
Luck, Sheryl!
Yes, me too. I may reconsider if real life ever stops being a horror movie.
I've found a much greater appreciation for Independence Day the last couple of years.
I've been watching the 1968 moon landing on American Experience. Richard Nixon looks way less evil to me by now. At least he could read a press release sincerely and without insulting anyone.
Sheryl, how did the first week of the special nanny go? I've got my fingers crossed!
I have this tendency to get random interests that I have to find out everything about and lately it's been the battle of Midway. Then all of the sudden I see there's a trailer for a new movie about Midway... "From the Directory of Independence Day".
I dunno, personally I think the old Midway movie wasn't that great so I'm curious if this one will be better. OTOH, the CGI looks awfully like CGI. OTOOH one of the scenes in the trailer sure looked like Dick Best with just his two wingmen in a vee formation making an off-the-beam attack on the carrier Akagi which is a pretty accurate detail. Akagi was only attacked by those three dive bombers and only Dick Best scored a hit, but he hit it in the worst place possible and that one hit ended up destroying Akagi. Dunno, suspect CGI but a very accurate detail. Maybe it will be a decent movie.
Even though it's an easy bar to beat, I doubt the new one will be better, especially given who's directing. More likely it'll be what Pearl Harbor was to Tora! Tora! Tora!, i.e., CGI of WWII aircraft pulling impossible 12G turns 30 feet off the ground with pilots yelling "Max Power!" Oh, and with a love story tacked on (although Midway had that, too).
Wait... Woody Harrelson is playing Chester Nimitz?!? That seems like an odd choice. (I knew nothing of this film until Gud mentioned it.)
I was really surprised to find out about it as well. It's hard to imagine that Tora! Tora! Tora! will ever be displaced as the definitive movie about Pearl Harbor, but Midway could be done so much better. But, yeah, it's hard not to have low expectations from the trailer though.
