I grew up in the house my father grew up in, which was built by his grandparents, who built it next to the house their older cousins built to replace the small cabin their grandparents built when they settled the area. My family doesn't go very far, typically.

I knew someone in college whose father had at some point gained some status in his field. Since the parents would be entertaining others in the field, often from other countries, they did a major redecorating sweep of the public areas of the house. In pride of place was a pair of lamps that had silk shades, hand painted with Chinese characters. His mother loved them ... until they had a Chinese guest who looked at the lamps and cracked up. He translated the characters. They said "arrogant rich". New shades went on the shopping list that evening.
