I know we are never doing this and yet my mind devotes a lot of time actually thinking about it.
The thing with individual homes is getting land. Many people seem to prefer to be in a somewhat urban environ, lots of talk of walkability or closeness to grocery, and access to culture.
getting plots of land to build multiple dwellings means getting outside of those areas.
Apartment buildings would have ground floor units.
Another thought which I actually think would be awesome is a hotel. It would require reno create multi bedroom units and living areas, but they usually have elevators and also common spaces we could make into things like community libraries and theaters.
Apartment buildings would have to be much more sound dampening than any I have previously lived in.
Like this cutie patootie old Motor Lodge with space to build additional cabins, plus - parking lot space that units could be enlarged onto.

My best bet is msbelle moving into my neighborhood.
The thing about this decadal I really like is it is also colliding with my worst emotional slump in probably 15 years, for reasons I fully understand & blahblahblah, but it doesn't fix it. Crawling out by my fingernails & faking it, but yeah.
your best bet is a good bet. We can emotional slump together.
I agree that a cluster of homes and/or apartments is the way to go.
My second favorite lottery fantasy is to buy one of those cute 1920s -era apartment sets that area group single floor buildings around a common garden area. Eldergoth Retirement Community!
The absolute favorite lottery fantasy is owning the wildly cliche gothic manor house of my dreams, complete with staff, secret passages, and a creepy looking cottage for the ornamental hermit to live in.
(The ornamental hermit is not Mr. Loomy.)
My lottery win fantasy is a campground with cabins and RV hookups with plenty of room for tiny-to-medium houses to act as a permanent F2F and/or Buffista retirement village. Only problem is I keep picturing 45-60 minutes drive from Minneapolis/St. Paul and I
know
that would not be the optimal climate for the group.
Good heavens, that link is a lot of house.
Also, ND, your garage is the size of my living space. I must admit I'm somewhat alarmed.
Leafs lost but the Sharks won. Life is weird, and hockey is weirder.
I remain very fond of all of you, but it is time for me to go to bed.
your garage is the size of my living space.
Yes, it was one of the odd selling points for this place. The house is about 1500SF, and the garage is almost as big. The garage is actually just slightly bigger than the house we moved out of.
Our eventual plan is to remodel most of the garage into an 800SF place for Pix's mom. At some point she'll move out here from CT.
I'm actually considering whether to offer my services as an ornamental hermit. Probably need to grow out the beard some more.
