The guy was being treated for Hodgkin's, which involved killing off his immune system and replacing it with new blood marrow -- and the donor had genes known to protect against HIV. So in order to get cured, he had to be nearly killed.
Here's a WashPost story that covers it much better than I can:

Susan Butcher in the early 90s.
I have met her! Multiple times! She's so awesome. Were I more outdoorsy, I would have tried to follow in her footsteps.
Sheryl, I have avoided play dates at the house so far for just that reason.
Since there is zero chance of getting to see Captain Marvel this weekend, I picked up Ant Man and the Wasp at the library so that I'll at least be caught up on the Marvel Cinematic Universe when I do see it.
After failing hard at being social, I'm going to a live Dear Prudence podcast tonight, going to Captain Marvel tomorrow night, and Captain Marvel again on Saturday afternoon. This might be a bit Much.
I don't count Lyft driving as being particularly Social, even though sometimes I have some delightful conversations or get to hear stuff or whatever.
But this week I have: gone to a services orientation at the employment center on Monday, spent most of the day yesterday tramping around Old Sturbridge Village with a friend visiting, and tomorrow I go to another, hopefully useful 2 hour class on Writing Your Resume at the same center.
That's about 300% more social than usual for me.
Oh, and today I got fitted for a bra, which dammit should count as social because the saleswoman was very nice about it and actually found something that fits my odd (if perfectly functional) torso.
So make that 400%.
Awesome news, Scrappy. Those students got a good one!
Way to go, Theo!
I hope it's all fun, shrift, and not just Too Much.
Almost done with my one day of work this week. I do not recommend this method of taking time off, btw.
Congratulations, Scrappy!!!
Go, Theo. I consider having to talk to everyone when I drop off ltc at school my social quota for the week.
Manafort was only sentenced to 47 months today.
