He was the sweetest and gentlest, even when he was mad at you (I did something once that got him mad at me, and he was so kind about it that I didn't realize until months later how upset he must have been), and when he wasn't mad at you he was... just, Ed. Kind, wry, terrifyingly bright and terminally self-deprecating Ed. Goddamn it. Fuck this year.
