While driving if I see a car at a crossroads stop sign creep forward I'll deliver a stern, "Stay!" They inevitably stop, and as I pass safely, I say approvingly, "Good car."
Hasn't failed me yet.
Off-topic discussion. Wanna talk about corsets, duct tape, butt kicking, or physics? This is the place. Detailed discussion of any current-season TV must be whitefonted.

I did some texting today for a Dem candidate for Arkansas State Senate. - The intro text says her name, TWICE and Arkansas State Senate. The # of people who respond TRUMP 2020 is puzzling.
Perhaps that is how they respond to all texts
"We're out of milk, pls pick some up"/TRUMP 2020
"You up?"/TRUMP 2020
"We tried to deliver your package but you weren't home..."/TRUMP 2020
"This text is related to a DoorDash delivery..."/TRUMP 2020
"Here"/TRUMP 2020
possibly. We are Repping the campaigns, obviously, so we stick to strict scripts and replies, but it makes me want to start a civics texting group, so I could respond - hey dummy, Trump doesn't make laws for your state - that's your state Senator and those laws affect you a lot more than who is President.
A friend of mine came over for a fire and driveway beers last weekend and she peed in our yard--by her choice. She had a mask so I was fine with her using our bathroom but she plays it safe.
Which is good.
DH pees in the back yard at night pretty regularly. He says he likes to save water by not flushing (he washes his hands in the utility sink by the back door).
Not one person on earth could walk into the White House in January and mend the damage while instituting miraculous life-changing policies right off the bat.
Beverly is wise. It will take us decades to bounce back from this nightmare.

Literally all of our state and local elections will be decided in the primary 9/1, and I still see people locally talking about getting ready to vote in November. It makes me nuts.

It wouldn't be puzzling if you lived here. Imagine a bunch of parrots wearing red MAGA caps.
the lack of willingness to *work together* to accomplish positive progress for everybody--both are sadly lacking
I've been despairing at the grasp of mutual responsibility here as well, especially since COVID. Seems to be much less "love your neighbor as yourself/one for all, all for one" model that I was hoping for, and more "if I'm fucked over, let everyone else be fucked over as well". If there's a set of mind that I'm allergic to is learned helplessness. To see it plays out on millions is despairing.
But it's not the people who despair me. It's a world that was taught to expect for the worse and accept this as the status quo, even if the actions of enough of us together can make a difference. And in the end, you can't survive without hope. So, even if it's out of spite, I remain hopeful. COVID will pass (because brilliant/lucky scientists) and I'll be able to hug my friends again. And until that happens (and after this happens), I might convince few other souls that their words actions matter and that there is a greater good, one m-f at a time. (Hi, I remain hopeful, but I still swear a lot).
(I originally came here to say that onion crackers are my new found love and that I speak to everything around me 24/7 as well, but then I saw Beverly's post, so you got a mini-speech).
Onion crackers sound good. Spite hope does, too.
It comes back to the Angel paraphrase- if nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do.
I know I am beating a dead horse and preaching to the choir, but the anger of some people scares me. Not the anger of protestors or "looters", but the anger of the police and my neighborhood Trump supporters. Personally, I have a pretty angry personality, but I hate who I become when I am enraged, so I have worked on that, but then their anger makes me angry and it just circles around. So I am also afraid of my anger back at them.
I am trying to assume best intentions- assume people are trying to their capacity, but it is hard. I can't really even try to engage or have rational arguments with people like JZ does, because my rage impedes my rhetoric and I just want to yell at them.
