I grew up in New Orleans. I don't think we believe in straight lines.
Cardinal directions mean nothing to me anymore, since moving to New Orleans.

Bennet, I grew up in Cruces. E= the Organs. I also have no inate sense of cardinal direction. I do have Baltimore figured out, but it is based still on geography.

Oh, god no. I didn't learn to navigate by direction until...after college, I think.
Sarameg, I don't know about you, but even after all these years away from El Paso, I'm still much more comfortable navigating by mountains or other geographical landmarks. Even in new places, I want something I can see in the distance to work with.
Skip, skip, skip to my Lou, skip to my Lou, my darlin'.
My sense of direction is based on my position relative to Cleveland Hopkins International Airport and where the Rocky River lets into Lake Erie. Ergo, I am screwed anywhere but in the West Park neighborhood of Cleveland.
I'm good with cardinal directions as long as I know the time of day, and can see the sun. That's west, okay, N, E, S--that way.
I'm still surprised with how my neighborhood actually aligns with the compass.
I still get mixed up about which way my house faces. The side that my brain says is north is actually west.
Except for where I work, we can use mauka and makai pretty effectively (up toward the mountain, and down toward the ocean). I actually gave my mother directions that were "when you reach an intersection, choose the road that goes up. Keep doing that till you run out of intersections"
I've spent most of my life with strong grids and cardinal directions. The biggest trick in Kansas City was knowing that the numbered streets go E-W in MO and N-S in KCKS, and E-W in the burbs south of KCKS. When I was doing props for Starlight back before smart phones and Google maps that was fun to learn.
I spent nearly all day in bed. I was really hoping this thunderstorm was going to ease my migraine when it went through but it was all noise. I've reached the point that I'm too bored to keep avoiding screens and I'm forcing myself to eat something.
My house is on a grid, and the sun hits my bedroom every morning, so that's easy. Elsewhere here, directest downhill, to harbor, is south, mostly, depending on where you start & I have a good feel for starts now.
