Australia is voting for gay marriage today! (actually, tomorrow, but today is already tomorrow in Australia). Go Australia!
Not exactly. The "vote" was officially a non-binding postal survey rather than a vote, because the Senate had blocked taking a plebiscite on the issue. Voting closed last week; today is when the Australian Bureau of Statistics announces the result.
The polling on the issue looks very promising, so fingers crossed. But even if it's a Yes vote, the whole thing is non-binding. The PM will lose all credibility if he doesn't then allow a free vote in Parliament to pass actual legislation; but if he does, he could lose the support of the far right trolls in his government. So there's a couple of things that will be revealed today.
