Because books.

Ah. I probably should have figured that out myself.

I must obey the inscrutable exhortations of my soul—Calvin and Hobbs

It looks like Irma shifted a bit overnight. Now the tracks seem to be trending a bit more easterly. So NC might get hit. I'm far enough inland that a Cat 5 that makes landfall in Wilmington gets knocked down to a Cat 3 or less by the time it reaches me. But that's still a fair bit of storm.

It's so weird to see references to the dangers and fierceness of Irma. My great aunt Irma was a lovely, sweet old lady when I knew her. She was a former hand model, and I got my first manicure as a memorial to her after she died. I think she'd be tickled to hear everyone talking about Irma in this way.

Our wings are not tired.

I was talking to my son earlier about Hurricane Andrew. Brendon was only 7 months old when it hit. It was forecast to hit Palm Beach County and we had stayed because my house was an ancient wood structure that had withstood many storms. Then at the last moment it took a wobble and hit 70 miles south of where it was expected. Wilma didn't go anywhere like predicted.

Just talked to DH a few minutes ago. He isn't considering staying.

That's good, Laura. Here's hoping he stays very safe :(

Is anyone else almost expecting the next thing to be a massive earthquake or something? Plague of locusts?

Sir, it's not an offence to let your cat eat your bacon. Okay? And we don't arrest cats, I'm very sorry.

I'm thinking collapse of the economy when Trump and congress fail to raise the debt ceiling.

I haven't trusted science since I saw the film "Flubber."

Volcano eruption?

"I remember when they eventually introduced that drug kingpin who murdered people and smuggled drugs inside snakes and I was like 'Finally. A normal person.'” —RahvinDragand

But between this and the fires on the West Coast, this is starting to feel like the part of the movie where the aliens are trying to wipe things out so they can terraform the planet.

Somewhere Ming the Merciless is chuckling and pushing buttons on his disaster machine. Next up: Hot Hail!

Ooh, volcano, I hadn't thought of that one. There is that supervolcano that could end the earth...
