The thought I have been trying to wrestle into coherency is that La La Land is the opposite of Immortal Beloved. My dad got really mad at Immortal Beloved for using Beethoven's music to wring emotional responses from the audience that the story didn't earn. Mom and I decided he probably wouldn't like La La Land (because he doesn't generally like musicals, I only thought about Immortal Beloved afterward) and saw it without him, so I can't compare his reaction. For me, though, I quickly reconciled that the music I was hearing in the score of La La Land, particularly in the epilogue, was not great music itself (I didn't go home humming any of it), but sort of a representation of imaginary music that would evoke all the images we were seeing and emotions that went with them. Like Tinkerbell being played by a point of light. And that totally works for me.

I was unaware I needed a Neko Atsume movie. But I do.
We were at a friend's house for the first time last week, and Tim realized it was like being in Neko Atsume, because they had several different colored cubes for the cats to sleep in, and 3 different cat towers, and a really comfy looking cat hammock. And one of their cats is about as big as Tubbs.
My friend and I (both space nerds) joked about the John Glenn sequence "OMG is he gonna make it?!" ...I was a little annoyed that it reminded me of the evil 2016 (via our loss of Glenn), but it was such a good film that the annoyance was slight.
Also: the casting for Glenn was GREAT. As all the Mercury 7 walked by, he was the only one that I "recognized".
I loved La La Land, in part because it is a small story. Can't agree with you on the costuming at all, Epic.
As I stated in my post, it's distinctly possible that my mom and I are just judgmental and/or bitchy. And I did adore about half of the costumes. But about half we really didn't care for. Obviously the costumer and whoever else makes those choices agreed with you rather than us!
There were, admittedly, at least a few that I thought to myself "I wouldn't think I would like that look, but in this case I do", so possibly I was swept up in the moment.

During Hidden Figures, I had to keep reminding myself that JOHN GLENN WOULD BE OKAY BECAUSE HE JUST DIED LAST MONTH.
Right there with you. Even knowing full well that everything would turn out all right (spoilers!), the anticipation in those scenes still had me tearing up knapkins in my hands.
It did occur to me upon leaving the film that prior to seeing it I couldn't have actually named any of the white men involved in the space program back then other than the astronauts themselves, so maybe my outrage over not having heard the stories of Johnson, Vaughan, and Jackson earlier was a bit premature.
Saw La La Land last night and Lion today. I liked Lion more.
La La Land was fine, enjoyable, but that was it, not much to talk about except the way it looked.
