I think my favorite part though is during "Dancing Queen" when the elderly woman carrying a huge bundle of sticks joyfully throws them aside and joins the procession.

A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.
The Comic-Con trailers for Wonder Woman and for Justice League actually look pretty good! Wonder Woman more so, I think, but I'm surprised at how promising Justice League looks.
I loved the Wonder Woman trailer. I was getting into and I realized it was set in WWI and the scene of her going over the trenches.
Yeah, and Captain Kirk is wearing the Blue Max and flying an Eindecker. What's up with that?
We saw Star Trek Beyond today. It was the fist movie I have seen in the theater in over a year, and it was just so much fun and perfectly what I needed.
I saw it too. We went with our pal Andy, who was the prop master on it, so that made it extra cool. I really enjoyed it--it just flew along, didn't it?
Saw
Les Innocentes
(which was called
Agnus Dei
at Sundance but is now
The Innocents
for some reason). It really just blew me away. Serious themes and complex characters, but also humor at times. It's especially interesting on faith. The cast is mostly women who give incredible performances. Beautiful cinematography. I will not be surprised if this shows up in the foreign-language category at the Oscars.
tl;dr: Like Bresson, but good.
Just got back from Jason Bourne. Very disappointing. Perhaps it was a mistake to watch the first three back to back last week because this one just doesn't compare. It took itself way too seriously and (even for a Bourne film) it strains credulity in so many places I lost count. Oh how I hate the soft bummerness of high expectations.
Aw, shoot, I was thinking of going to see Jason Bourne.

It really depends on your tolerance for action sequences. I could cut them down radically in almost any movie. Here they are just not believable and go on forever. My favorite thing about the Bourne films is him outsmarting his opponents and/or the puzzle of it all. That just isn't what this film is.
Also, more serious potential spoiler: the first thing my critic friend said to me after it was over was "Does that count as fridging?"
