She's a Russian secret agent with a color/animal code name and a backstory involving ballet, but other than that, no. It's a slow talky espionage story and J-Law's motivations and choices are driven by a completely different set of pressures.

OK. Sounds like it could still be interesting, though. I just won't watch it with my original expectations.
It's definitely more like a Le Carré novel than an "action" movie, that's for sure. The film had a few too many "I can't watch this" parts for me, but I think I am going to check out the novel. It is rated very highly on Goodreads.

Just came back from Annihilation. Based on words of mouths, I was expecting it to be pee-in-pants scary and it's... not, in the standard sense. It's sci-fi with horror elements rather than straight-up horror, and jump scares are few and far in between. It is leisurely paced and quietly builds up dread, with a dazzling final act that amps up the otherworldly and leaves you with more questions than answers. I found the whole thing profoundly disquieting and disorienting. I kinda want to know more about this world, so might be checking out the books on which the movie is based. The cast, of mostly women, is dynamite.
At any rate, I liked it a lot. I think it's coming to Netflix soon-ish but it's a type of movie better seen on the big screen.

Just got back from Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool. Sad, but very good. It was great to see Annette Bening in a starring role again, and this is the sort of movie Jamie Bell should be making rather than crap like that Fantastic Four movie.

Netflix has international distribution rights, which isn't a great sign of studio confidence. Glad to hear you recommend it because I *really* want it to be great!
Well, I made it with two hours to spare, but I finally saw the last of the Best Picture nominees this afternoon. Gary Oldman should definitely get the Best Actor award, and the makeup artists probably deserve a win for the job they did turning him into Winston Churchill, but I really don't think Darkest Hour deserves anything else it's up for.
