Just got back from Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool. Sad, but very good. It was great to see Annette Bening in a starring role again, and this is the sort of movie Jamie Bell should be making rather than crap like that Fantastic Four movie.

Well, I made it with two hours to spare, but I finally saw the last of the Best Picture nominees this afternoon. Gary Oldman should definitely get the Best Actor award, and the makeup artists probably deserve a win for the job they did turning him into Winston Churchill, but I really don't think Darkest Hour deserves anything else it's up for.

FUCKIN' A! Roger Deakins!! I can go to bed now. He has been nominated 14 times with no wins until now, and this wasn't a life achievement type consolation prize either - the cinematography was the best thing about Blade Runner 2049. OH MY GOD, SO HAPPY. I love his work.

The music for The Shape of Water is lovely but honestly it's a travesty that Jonny Greenwood didn't win it for Phantom Thread, which has the best score of any films of the year by a HUGE margin. Bah!

It looked great to me.
I think the only decision that disappointed me was "Remember Me" winning best song over "This Is Me." Though perhaps Gael Garcia Bernal's horrible rendition of the first half prejudiced me against it—who told him he should sing in a public setting, anyway?
I just hope this doesn't mean Pierce Brosnan taking the stage to sing something from the Mamma Mia! sequel next year...
