I overheard a couple of my co-workers discussing Trump the other day and I was shocked at how approving they were of him. One of them, at least, said she liked some of his policies but he was a racist, and the other one didn't know what she was talking about. So I think people are somehow getting even less news than I do and just approving single sentences they hear he might have said.

For Trump, that's actually a pretty high bar.
He appeals to the "I'm gonna say whatever I want" crowd, who don't realize that the job he's after isn't Obnoxious Sports Commentator.
Trumps campaign website actually has zero information on his policies or his stand on issues. It mostly has information on himself. In other words, it's perfect.
He appeals to the "He's saying out loud what I'm actually thinking" crowd.
And he is pulling attention away from Jeb, letting him run a fairly quiet campaign for now.
Oh, since I was making fun of Wacker St, I should admit that the back door of my office is on Dummer St. That doesn't help anything, either!

I suppose, but he's spouting such a wide variety of nonsense, it seems like people are hearing just the things they do agree with and not even aware of the things they don't.
From my sample size of two.
Ooh, I like those plum chairs.
I should admit that the back door of my office is on Dummer St.
Ooh, does Dummer intersect with another street to make a funny?
