The money was too good. I got stupid.

For a non-story-based approach, "The Cartoon Guide to Ancient/World History" is great, as is "Cartoon Guide to U.S. History." I learned so much about Middle East history that way. They're very good about showing warts and all. There are also several Cartoon Guides to various science and math topics. "The Cartoon Guide to Algebra" is giving me a great refresher.

Connie, good thoughts for info to accompany movies, but I do want him reading.

Every now and then, I think I might actually be a little odd.

Oh, yeah, the Cartoon Guides are great.

Once I get through Cartoon Guide to Algebra, I'll take another swing at Cartoon Guide to Physics.

Fandom means never having to say "But where would I wear that?"

Timelies all!

Why does it feel like it's later in the week than it is?

I am a woman of various inclinations and only some of the time are they to burn everything down in frustration

Because these three days have been one million years long.

Or maybe that's just today. I feel like I've been behind all day and running to catch up. Exhausting.

You were a wrong baby who grew up wrong. The wrong kind of wrong. It's better you hear it from a friend.

Congratulations ND for claiming your fiefdom! Do not fear to rule it with an iron fist. Then with a wooden foot, and finally with a piece of string.

Hi Raq!

Meanwhile, in Australia--bat invasion!

Please note that where the headline refers to 100K bats, they mean 100,000 bats, not 100-kilo bats. (Incidentally, Bateman's Bay is where my family went for our summer holidays when I was but a wee sprog. Gareth managed to get stung on the foot by a bluebottle, but we had no bat-related encounters.)

That's the pain / That cuts a straight line down through the heart / We call it love

Some recs for mac:

The Ear, the Eye, and the Arm, by Nancy Farmer. On the young end of YA, sci-fi set in a future Zimbabwe, three detectives with special powers are called in to solve a kidnapping case. [link]

Boy Nobody, by Allen Zadoff. YA action/thriller about a teenage assassin, first in a series. [link]

For quick, fun sci-fi books, has he read any Terry Pratchett or Douglas Adams? Or for dystopian sci-fi, what about Trent Reedy (Divided We Fall series) or Marie Lu (Legend series)?
