Rebecca most of my kids' favorites probably skew too young to appeal to mac, but they like The Unwanteds series. That one seems to have a bigger age range in its appeal. And Isaac read and loved the old Robin Hood.
What about Atul Gawande's Better? That's written for adults but I don't think the language or concepts would be a barrier, and his basic message is medicine is not perfect, it may not even be perfectible, but when practiced with diligence, it gets better and better.

If you can download ebooks to your device, you need to back them up somewhere else in case Amazon or B&N decide to take them away. Back 'em up to a cloud service or your laptop/desktop. Then you can use Calibre to strip the DRM:
