If you can download ebooks to your device, you need to back them up somewhere else in case Amazon or B&N decide to take them away. Back 'em up to a cloud service or your laptop/desktop. Then you can use Calibre to strip the DRM:

Turns out that floating around in a thermally heated pool while it's grey, chilly, and drizzly is pretty freaking awesome! And we had one day of sunny weather so I really, really can't complain! Except about how reentry from even a tiny, short vacation like that is pretty hard.
