Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be.

Did I mention here that we're rearranging our office space to fit more people? So I'm in a different office, and my boss is in my old space. She's been in an office alone for a while, and we usually shut the door when we meet, because almost literally all we talk about is other people! Managing people in our team, issues with working with people outside our team, etc. Her new officemates find it very off-putting, which I think is hilarious, because one of the often meets with my grandboss with the door shut, and I had no compunction about walking in! I figure if it's that confidential, they go to the grandboss's office, and no way are they talking about me. Anyway. Office politics!

Sheryl, I am so happy for you and Gary.

My coworker, who is my age (42), is being honored for 25 years of employment. In the 25 years since I turned 18, I've lived in 5 states plus a foreign country (twice), and I can't even count the number of jobs I've held (some of them academic posts and projects, natch.) I cannot even imagine spending 25 years working at one place.

Sir, it's not an offence to let your cat eat your bacon. Okay? And we don't arrest cats, I'm very sorry.

Congrats, Sheryl and Gary!

flea, congrats to your co-worker. Did he/she really start there at 17? Wow.

I'm in my 25th year at my company but I started here when I was 23. I've held a couple of different positions and have moved offices once. But they have kept me challenged and I like the work, so here I am.

Kindle did not start up this morning. It looks like it turns on, but it the touch screen doesn't respond. I'm so mad at myself. The flight home is going to suck. Or I could by a physical book to read. Those still do exist.

I've been at my current job for 19 years. Dunno how much longer I'll be here, but probably at least one more year.

ION, I'm tired and somewhat hungover this morning. I was planning on going to bed early last night, but instead I ended up doing vodka shots with Anna. But at least my feeling a little crappy was worth it.

Same.

...and my beloved grandboss is leaving! And I have to assume, looking to take my less-beloved boss with him. (He brought her here as well.) So we'll see what happens.

Since we're a library, a decent number of people start as student shelvers in high school or college, and turn it into a career.

You can retire with a full state pension at 30 years in. The whole pension system is set up so people with lives like my coworker do very well and can retire before 50, whereas those of us who move around are kind of screwed.

Coding and Sleeping

I've had five jobs and worked for nine companies, not counting any non-career jobs. I think it would be really hard to work for a single software company for 25 years.
