I can see it. Look at Peggy's clothes, her make-up (or lack of it). England had been at war for a year, austerity was the order of the day and Peggy felt she had to keep calm and carry on. It was a lovely contrast to Whitney, who for years refused to do the expected thing and finally caved to expediency; whereas Peggy toed the line for so long, until necessity dictated otherwise. It shows the difference in mindset, yet that they both arrived at positions of power through different means.

Did any of y'all watch The Bletchley Circle? It was a great show about some of those women in the 50s and I think most of them did get married and put all of that behind them.

Yes, that was the main premise of the show. One of the women discovers a mystery and, behind the backs of their husbands, gets the band back together to try and solve it.
