Well, I just saw it. Going backward, more or less, my first comment is
fucking clanging?!?!? I sat through watching the name of everyone who has ever so much as spit in the direction of Hollywood scroll by just for a black screen and fucking clanging?!?!? OK, yes, an homage to the genesis of Iron Man and all that. But still. Anyway, Tony and Steve had good endings. For that matter, so did Natasha, in a way. I'll admit, I didn't expect to lose more than one of the original six, so Stark was a surprise. Good way for him to go, though, saving all life in the universe. I'm pretty sure Peggy looked like her 1940s self, not 1970s, so I'm thinking Steven went way back. My theater went absolutely nuts when Sam's voice came over the comms and then the Wakandans showed up. The last, big fight scene was really well done. I loved Thor's mom, and it was great to see her again for a little bit. Gamora's arc was good, although it feels like shooting your earlier self could lead to some timey-wimey issues. There were lots of other bits that were satisfying. I'm sad that we'll never get a Black Widow movie. I feel like Captain Marvel was underused, but with so many characters there probably wasn't a way to do more with her.
Anyway. First reactions and all that.
FWIW - I think we will get a
Black Widow origin movie.
I would really like that, msbelle.
That...did not go the way I expected. But I liked it! I cried, but I didn't ugly cry like I thought I would.
I will never, EVER get over
Cap using Mjolnir.
EVER. I think I actually shrieked in the theater, while all the other, more reasonable people just clapped.
It's a tiny thing, I know, but I was so damn happy
to see Jarvis in the 1970s.
Not a fan of
the fat jokes. They're just mean and a cheap way to get laughs.
To be clear,
I don't have a problem with portraying someone who experienced an absolute shitload of trauma trying to cope by turning to alcohol and food. I don't have a problem with Thor getting chunky as a result of that. But the jokes at his expense were unkind and really unnecessary.
I'm super tired, so I'm sure I'll post more tomorrow. I just want to say in conclusion: needed more Venom.
Ryan and I have seen it! And I am proud to report that we both managed to get through the entire movie without a single toilet break.
Ok, back to read the whitefont.

I agree. And the
jokes were a bit mean spirited. I expected it from Rocket, not so much from Rhodey. Also, did you notice that Thor got to drink himself into a beer belly and questionable hair choices, but Valkyrie—who was also drinking her way through major trauma at the beginning of Thor 3—had to stay hot? Not that I mind watching Tessa Thompson being the hot bi superhero we've been crying out for (AT ALL), but there's a wee bit of a double standard going on there.
The scene with the woman squad powering their way across the battlefield was nice. Speaking of the battlefield, that much CGI is really blurring the line between live action and animation in a way that leads to beautiful fight scenes and problematic awards. Spend much more time with computerized monsters and Michael Douglas and these movies will start to qualify for best animated feature.
Ahhhh! That was so much better than I was expecting!!!
I absolutely screamed when
Cap picked up Mjolnir.
The moment of all the
women surrounding Carol was a little gratuitous, but if this means the next era of the MCU is basically Carol not needing no man? I'm HERE FOR IT.
I can't believe no one has mentioned
Sam becoming Captain America
yet.
Also I was laughing because when Kat P was talking about the red carpet,
she said something like, "Everyone who's ever been in one of these movies just showed up for the premiere." But NO! They were ALL in it! Except they couldn't get (or CGI) Lupita just for one of those balcony scenes?
And my cousin wondered about
the kids in school -- are half of them kids who were five years behind? I guess so? I refuse to think too hard about the ramifications of time travel.
I can't believe no one has mentioned
That was excellent.
I've been awake for 2 damn hours even though it's a Saturday and I don't have to be up at 7. Thanks, brain. So I've been thinking too much about the implications of
Steve staying in the past, and even though it's SO emotionally satisfying,
it's really troubling me. Because, if I'm understanding
the rules the movie established for time travel, in order to not fuck up the existing timeline, Steve could stay in the past, but couldn't intervene in anything that he already knows has happened/will happen.
And that means
he knowingly lets Bucky be tortured and brainwashed and turned into an assassin.
And after
Civil War, where Steve was ready to burn the world down to save Bucky, I just can't see Steve living through what he knows is going to be done to Bucky and doing nothing.
I don't dislike the choice
for Steve to stay in the past, because he deserved a happily ever after as much as Tony did,
but I'm just conflicted about what it means.
I thought that Captain Marvel
was woefully underused, but I know the movie was more about wrapping up the OG Avengers, and Carol is the future of
the MCU.
And my cousin wondered about
Jesse, I wondered about that, too.
Oh! You guys, did your theater collectively gasp when
Clint's family got dusted? Ours did, which was kind of awesome,
in the sense of "Oh, I'm in a theater full of fans like me!"
Tep, for my own mind thought stuff...
if Nebula can kill her past self and remain alive and past!Gamora can remain in the future, her timeline all Jeremy Bearimy, Steve and SWINTON! totally found a way to allow him and Peggy to have some sort of pocket timeline in the dot of the Bearimy i.
I'm willing to accept
A Wizard Did It (aka SWINTON Did It)
as an explanation for events. Steve just
made sure SWINTON was his last stop on his tour, and she and the Time Stone deposited him in the correct timeline.
