Just finished Stranger Things last night. That was more 80's than most 80's media I remember. What a nostalgia bomb. I was surprised to hear the creators were in their early 30's. I thought they must have been the kids' age when the series was set (i.e. basically my age, mid-40's).
Winona Ryder was excellent but I was blindsided by how great the kid actors were. Seriously they were fantastic. Especially the girl who played Eleven, holy crap. And the Dustin actor, who had this amazing comic instinct.
"Why are you keeping the curiosity door locked?!"
I could quibble plot holes and how (deliberately) derivative the whole thing was. But the thing is, they got the important things right, which is the characters. The kids were immediately lovable and distinct from the episode one. It took me a couple of eps to warm up to Joyce and the Sheriff but they did an admirable job fleshing out the adults out by the end. Even the minor supporting characters -- like, how great was that science teacher? SO GREAT.
Barb is huge on Tumblr right now.

Yes! and the parents of Mike and Karen. I only wish they had fleshed out the bad guys more, but that's a minor quibble since there will be another season of the show.
I want to discuss the last scenes, but I don't know if they count as spoilers.
Do we think that Eleven is alive but in the Upside-down? Is Will still connected to it or is the creature regenerating inside him??

Fuck yeah. Looks like I picked the right time to cut the cord. Adventure Time and Rick & Morty were the only shows that I was hurting for when I dropped cable.

Cord cutting twinz! We're doing it FOR REAL THIS TIME this week! And have signed up for trials of hulu and acorn (and have watched a couple eps of Misfits FINALLY!).
Quester, re. your questions for Stranger Things: in a word, yes.
I think this is the showrunners' way of leaving the door open a sliver for possible season 2. I have mixed feelings. While I loved these characters, I think this particular story has been told and it would be a mistake to bring the entire cast back for S2. If they wanted to do a second season, it'd be smarter to do an anthology-type structure with maybe a thematic connection. Or bring one or two characters back but not the entire set-up.
