I thought that both Lemony Snickett adaptations were too hammy and campy. This show errs on the side of being too deadpan, which I think is the right call. And the production design is impeccable.

Whoever was casting this based on the intensity of my "Oh HELL no!" reaction somehow overlooked Mel Gibson and Lena Dunham.
"From the visionary minds behind Batman Begins and Man of Steel"? No thanks. If they wind up with something that is even more drained of human empathy than Asimov's original writing, it will be quite an accomplishment, but it looks like that is what they're aiming for.
