Fingers crossed I have a better evening tonight than last night. In addition to feeling stuffed up (I can breathe fine but my ear is full of fluid!), I felt awkward and lonesome, and danced not at all (I left early, and most of the evening was watching competitions, but still). I just checked a couple of bookish places online, and the least-damaging bad smell solution seems to be sprinkling the book with baking soda, putting it in a bag for 24 hours, and then shaking and dusting it out; the soda should absorb at least enough of the smell to let you read the book. (Alternatively, another site suggested putting the book in the freezer, but I am highly suspicious of any Joey Tribbiani-approved method of book maintenance.)
