New boss had his first day today. We did some walk-arounds and had good conversations and that gave me a really good feeling about how he'll handle issues going forward, which is: sensible and cautious and taking into all pre-existing perspectives while adding new insight. No ego or "I already have a great project in mind that adds more work without addressing established needs". Just getting a vibe for the place and already being helpful in areas that we need help. Crazy. Was great with our special needs volunteer group, and despite several almost-pratfalls that had me worried about him physically, buckled down and helped me mulch and had no complaint about shouldering the responsibility of cleaning up the garbage area.

He did intimidate me with his enormous collection of books that he'd brought (about 15 liquor boxes worth) and asking me if I was familiar with any of them. I knew one. It felt like a test.

But, at least he's enthusiastic, and had no problem in admitting when he didn't know something, which made me feel comfortable admitting when I didn't know something, instead of it being a pissing contest of faking how perfect we were in our hort knowledge.

Very laid back and easy-going.

He just needs to stop tripping on shit.

So, my Lyrica saga seems to finally be at an end. About 10 days ago I gave up fighting insurance and agreed to try the gabapentin. I have been dizzy and feeling off ever since. A couple of nights ago I sent an e-mail to my doc explaining the dizzy and asking how long I had to stay on the gabapentin before insurance would reconsider approving Lyrica. I haven't heard a word back and had decided I'd call the office tomorrow. I was at the store picking up a couple of other refills and Lyrica was included with my other prescriptions - approved by insurance even.

Now the only question is how long until the dizzy goes away. But I have Lyrica!!! This has been my excitement for the day.

So I missed a neighborhood vigil for McKenzie Elliot tonight, found out after the fact. There was a big media covered pols & police one last night, but this one was just for neighbors and friends, requested by her parents. Which I think is nice. Ran into a neighbor who'd gone, out walking his dog. He was musing on what else to do, how depressing it is to happen here. This, I said. What you have always done.Walk your dog, befriend all the other dog walkers, chat with your neighbors, mind the kids in the alley, organize them into a game ( this guy raised his boys here, has been a father figure to several of their peers in the hood. His favorite disaster story is the eldest of the current unattended youngsters and is a proud Marine now.) Gestured to the half dozen people on the field picnicking and tossing frisbees and balls around. The city adult league lacrosse game drafting spectators for enough player to round out the teams on the ballpark field. This is what we can do. Build a community.

And the we were talking about missing Tara and how we should caravan out to the Shore en masse and camp out on her new front porch. "You can leave Ednor Gardens, but we won't leave you!"

And he hugged me and said, thank you, I needed that.

And this is why I love this city and hood.

We leave for Las Vegas for a couple of days in the morning and I need to pack. Work just wore me the hell out this morning. I'm going to call in for a meeting in the morning but I hope I can just not think about it for a couple of days.

Suzi, when I was on neurontin (for nerve pain), my doctor told me to just play with the dosage until I found one that helped the pain but left me able to function. I don't play a medical professional on TV, but I just thought I'd mention it.
