I'm sorry, msbelle. That's a rough headspace to be in. Movies and fruit sounds like a good idea. I'm about to do a little wine tasting, myself.
Just spoke to my parents - they are off to Pacifica for their anniversary where they expect to be cooler. Smart move. And my dad will be on a backpacking trip next Sunday, so Mom and I may observe Father's Day without him. Maybe I will try to find a beach somewhere not too far away tomorrow...
So sorry, Consuela. :(
Yay job offer, shrift!
I feel like a truck hit me. Took a three hour nap, wherein I kept thinking I should move my arms or legs or roll over but it somehow seemed like that would take WAY too much energy. Which was freaky. Am awake and showered now, but not sure I can handle dancing. Will probably go over there to be social, though. Didn't get hardly any work done and need to do a bunch of it tomorrow or Sunday I guess. Boo.
Congrats on the offer, shrift! What do you think you're going to do?
I don't want to stay in my current role even if they transition me to another group, because I've been talking to people in the potential new group and some are having a great experience and some are advising me to run.
Taking this offer would put me in the org I want to be in long-term, and it's much easier to transfer positions once you get in there and people know you. So even if the job doesn't turn out to be a great fit, it puts me in a better position to find another. Transferring to Dublin would still be very much on the table. Plus I already know and like the people I'd be working with in the offered role.
The cost of living increase will be steep, but I've been doing some research about different costs and crunching some numbers. Looking at the average percentage of salary spent on rent in SF. I work in tech and I'm paid well, so it's doable.
I'm a little worried about my ability to get up early to commute, but it also really would be nice to be excited about my work again.
tl;dr basically I guess I should do it.
shrift in the Bay!!!!!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT! Where do you think you'll want to live? Down the peninsula or in SF?

Not sure. I'm leaning toward SF but I haven't actually looked at anything down in the peninsula yet. I don't want to own a car, though.

Well they famously have buses which will take you from SF to your new job. I can tip you to the neighborhoods which facilitate that, though you probably already have a sense.
If you're going to go carless, commuting with bikes is common on the peninsula. But I have the feeling SF proper will be more to your liking since you're coming straight from Chitown.

Yes, I have taken those buses like the tech asshole that I am. We also have internal maps, but I am in information-gathering mode so I'll take all tips.

I do like living in a city proper, this much is true.
I don't know if I can envision shrift commuting on a bike.
I have some friends who relocated there in the past couple of years. They moved with toddler and pregnant, (plus going 2 salaries to 1+ school) so had different priorities, but might have insight to the relo experience and cola shift. Let me know if you want their contact info. I think they ended up out in Emeryville?
