Oh, and in the interests of cutting costs, I'm planning on cutting the landline, now that no one's home all day most of the week. Has anyone done that? What were the downsides, if any?

Yeah, I cut my landline about nine or ten years ago. (i've lived by myself all that time.) Can't think of any downsides off the top of my head.
Everybody does that sort of thing, Tom. I left my regular glasses at home last week, which wouldn't have been a problem, except I was out after dark and had to drive home wearing my prescription sunglasses. That was fun!
I have so been there.
Sorry it's been a rough 24 hours, Tom. Hugs.
I've been without a landline for many years. My cell is now the number that I had for decades as a landline.
My contacts don't get lost because I leave them in my head for a month at a time, but if sunglasses were any indication, I would lose glasses often and everywhere. Can not count how many times I have left my sunglasses places.
We haven't had a land line in 7 years. Can't say we've missed it.
I cut my landline in 2007. Now I just have one voice mail to forget to check.

Huh, I hadn't thought of that. But I've had this cell number for a few years and I've begun training people to call that instead of the house. No biggie, I'll let people know as I go along.
edit: and since the landline didn't have voice mail, this is a step up.
I haven't had one in...12 years? The only reason I miss it is because our house has the WORST reception. It's just a dead zone so often. But I never missed it when I lived at my apartment.
And now that M is old enough to be left home alone while I shop or run quick errands, I would feel better if he had a phone for the house. But I imagine he will have a phone very soon, and anyway, the longest I've left him was about 45 minutes -- and there's tons of neighbors he could hop to.
I had a landline ages ago, but it was only connected to the Tivo.
