What even is 420? I mean, why is it code for pot? We definitely didn't have that In My Day.

Around here 4/20 is both the anniversary of the Columbine shooting and pot heads on parade. Recreational pot is legal though not in public spaces. Doesn't stop the faithful though.
Supposedly it started with a group of students who would meet at 4:20 and get high.
I think it's been around for 10 or 15 years.
Around here, it's an excuse for morning DJs to giggle like 12-year-olds and pretend to be hip.
I thought it was some sort of law enforcement code reference. I suppose you could try running the Marathon stoned if you were so inclined.
Around my house, we call this "Real Patriots Day" to distinguish it from 9/11 johnny-come-lately holiday names.
Well, I am glad I was not out of touch in college. I remember when those students told me about it, they were shocked that I would even ask them to work on 4/20!
That's fucking ridiculous, anyway. People have to work on St Patrick's Day, too!
When Steph was getting ready for the 5K, someone said to push yourself at the end, not at the beginning, which I think is really interesting to think about in general, but really applies to the marathon today! Look at the women's winner. [link]

The tornado warning has moved north of me. I used to go to my "safe place" when there was a warning, but radar is so pinpoint now that I just watch television.
We didn't do anything on 4/20 when I was in Madison. We just had the Marijuana Harvest Festival. where you could buy pot brownies from the co-op that was sponsoring the fest.
(The brownies were terrible, as they were made from carob instead of chocolate.)
Wow, so close!
I don't remember when I first heard 420, but it was longer than 15 years ago. It was not a thing when I was in college. Popularized early 90s, I'd say. I think all the explanations for where it came from have been debunked.
