I'm interested in buying a region-free DVD player (dammit, BBC, put out Victorian Farm in Region 1!). They seem easily affordable, and I'm wondering if it's a good idea to buy something like this online.

I had reasonable luck buying a region free DVD/Blu Ray player online, Connie. And when I ran into a technical glitch over a year after buying it, tech support was very responsive and cleared everything up. I used 220 Electronics. [link] The site doesn't look like much, but I liked their customer service.
I've bought two refurbished region-free players online and both have worked perfectly.
Excellent, now to find out that I can plug into my computer as well as my TV (I like hunching over my 17" laptop screen).
Strix, insent.
Omg that link made me laugh and laugh and then you all made me laugh. Crying.
I betaed a novel for Seanan many years ago, before she was published. She was definitely working on another novel, though perhaps taking a short break as she banged out the YA idea she had. Still, she sent me a reasonably long chapter every day as well as an edited earlier chapter. I was her beta for maybe three weeks and the novel was in workable second draft form. While she worked a full time job.
It was scary impressive.
Tonight my wife and I are blowing the entire "staycation" budget we set aside for our spring break at one restaurant, the Catbird Seat. Nashville only has one Michelin rated restaurant and this is it. I am excited.
Timelies all!
Seanan is indeed prolific. She posts a monthly list of what she's working on(just novels) and between that and her monthly "what's coming out when" post I'm tired for her.
Tomorrow night we're going to see Pentatonix in concert. Whee!
At this time of day I like to pull up the local news traffic website and watch the usual location suspects start changing color.
Today's adventures in home purchasing. Had the inspection which didn't turn up anything too crazy. The AC unit is original from 1982 and should have quit a while ago but is still working fine. And the water heater is from 1997 so that is on the edge. We are going to ask the seller for a home warranty but if she says no, I'll buy my own.
So speak to me of home warranties.
I also got a couple of quotes for car and home insurance. My current company had a lower home owners policy cost but my second quote is quadrupling my vehicle coverage, increasing my home coverage and still will cost less overall. Bizarre. It really does pay to get multiple quotes.
