Her name was Eleanor Hibbert [link] and she wrote under a number of names. Including Jean Plaidy and Victoria Holt. The Holt novels were 'Gothic Romance' and I devoured them in probably middle school.

We were talking about writers like her in Literary a while back. Phyllis Whitney, Dorothy Eden, I forget the others.
