I have some concerns as to whether I would pass a background check for the FBI. Or maybe I would, considering I passed a rigorous and gnarly background check for my current employer. Who knows?
I suspect I have a file due to that time I worked for the United States Information Agency before it got folded into the State Department. Over the years, a friend I met there liked to send me emails with the word "bomb" in them whenever he was doing contract work in the Middle East. Good times.

beth, to follow up, I do thank you for the tip. I'd prefer to do an internal transfer with my current employer, but I can't wait forever because I spend too much time wanting to light people on fire. This means I need to job search outside my company in case nobody internal wants to hire me anytime soon.
My lease is up in April, so I'm going to use that as a deadline to figure out what my next steps are going to be.
