Sometimes I miss having powers... Oh. Oh! I know what this is! This is peer pressure! Any second now you're gonna make me smoke tobacco and--and have drugs!

Wait, is this real-world child support, where the money goes to buy food for the kids, or MRA fantasyland child support where the women just buy Ferraris and cocaine? -Jessica

I really wish this government shutdown would end. I'm starting to freak a little.

Sir, it's not an offence to let your cat eat your bacon. Okay? And we don't arrest cats, I'm very sorry.

Dunno about the shutdown, but apparently Boehner and other Republican leaders admit in private that they're not gonna make the US default on its debt.

So that's two weeks we have to make it through. I think Caltech can carry us for that long.

"And to be clear, I am the hell. And the high water."

2 weeks from today, that is. Debt limit is 10/17.

It should start hitting some of the states next week I think.

Could end in a week if this motion to discharge can find 20 sane Republicans who are not complete cowards. [link]

So probably two weeks then.

"And to be clear, I am the hell. And the high water."

I don't want the government re-opened without an increase in the debt limit. I don't want to go through worse in 2 weeks.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

If you beat them on the shutdown it then becomes easy to beat them on the debt ceiling. Use some of the absurd workarounds Obama objects to get around the absurd practice of authorizing running up bills then refusing to authorize paying them.

Platinum coin. (Completely legal. And if the Feds follow through on their refusal to accept the coin, they are violating the law and the executive can use its power to force them to accept it.) If Obama is too gutless for that confrontation:

The Treasury (which is under direct orders of the President) could issue Consols. Consols are bonds which pay interest indefinitely and don't require the government to every repay principle. Interest does not count under the debt ceiling, so the Treasury could issue as many Consols as they want without violating the ceiling. No constitutional issue. The Treasury already has statuatory authority to issue any bonds not in violation of any law.

I don't know why Obama refuses to use these. Maybe he will if he has to, but thinks it would be better to make the Republicans back down if can. Or maybe he hopes to finally get the Social Security cutting "Grand Bargain" the Republicans turned out previously cause even thought it would hurt poor people it would not hurt them enough. I want to think better of him and that it is the first rather than the second. But there is absolutely no reason to let the Republicans use the debt ceiling as leverage for anything.
