Love is stronger than death and harder than sorrow. Those who practice it are fierce like the light of stars traveling eons to pierce the night.

Except some of the states are closing down polling areas and making people wait 4+ hours to vote.

Same dog, different leg.

"There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea."

Anyone have a London hotel recommendation? We'll have the 4-year old with us, although she has already told us she'd prefer Paris to check on Madeline.

This is my favorite place to stay in London link.

"And to be clear, I am the hell. And the high water."

I am in a dissertation meeting. We are waiting for a faculty member who is late to the meeting.

The faculty member we are waiting on never confirmed the meeting. So we are likely waiting on someone who will never show up.

Why would you have such an important meeting and not confirm the date and time with all members of the committee? In my life I have never encountered this until today.

Cats to become a rabbit should gather immediately now here

Was a Young Person in charge of confirming? Because they don't seem to confirm- they assume you are confirmed if you do not say no. They also don't confirm themselves. I actually had one not confirm when I said I could meet "any time after 6". She just showed up at 8 and thought I would be there.

"And to be clear, I am the hell. And the high water."

the student was the one sending out email messages and I think the student is 35-40 in age.

have you ever had someone run a meeting and couldn't hear the people in the meeting?

I am in hell, people.

That reminds me of le nubian's story about the student who cancelled the meeting she had "scheduled" but had never told le nubian about.

The faculty member we are waiting on never confirmed the meeting. So we are likely waiting on someone who will never show up.

Depending on the congeniality of the committee members, we would proceed with the defense, and assuming that the oral defense was judged adequate and the document fixable, the Chair would meet with the remaining member to ensure that that person's concerns were also addressed.

Of course, the student must know that if the last committee member wants to be obstinate, the whole thing might have to be done again. But I've never seen that happen.

Getting four or five academics to show up in the same place at the same time is sufficiently difficult that you have to make allowances. You never know when one of them might have "an idea" and be lost to the world for a few days.

Why did Darth Vader cross the road? To get to the Dark Side!

I am in hell, people.

That may well be true. Let's hope for purgatory and you get out of there soon.

Kate, better yet? This wasn't a student! It was someone who works in the provost's office.
