Punishingly Intricate

Yum! I probably would have gotten the Magic Hour--gin, citrus, and sparkling wine! Yummy for me!

Why did Darth Vader cross the road? To get to the Dark Side!

Boo for layoffs, Calli! May something good appear soon!

Yay for fancy cocktails with Scola and msbelle!

I am exhausted by the last week of school. How can that be a rational plan for the coming summer? I have two kids home with me tomorrow. I'm thinking swimming at Sunset Rec or the beach, am I right?

Jealous of msbelle and Scola! And cocktails, mmm.

Hivemind: What is a reasonable rate to offer someone for housesitting? I have no idea what to base this on. We'll be out of town for 19 days this summer, so we asked our catsitter if she'd like to housesit for us (she used to live in our neighborhood until she had to move back in with her parents, so I figured this might be a pretty nice deal for her), but I don't know what to pay her. When she was catsitting, we paid her $10/day for two visits per day. Housesitting would mostly involve feeding the cats, and also occasionally watering the flowers out front, so not really much more in the way of duties; the main thing would just be having her here most nights, to keep the place (and the cats) occupied. Do we need to offer more than the $10/day rate?

Because books.

I would think maybe almost double that per day, or offer a nice round flat fee, like $300 or something.

I am exhausted by the last week of school.

Right there with you.

I agree, if you want her to stay there for the nights, I'd offer a bit more.

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

I only took msbelle to the best cocktail bar in the U.S.

Pfft. 7 in Seattle and 1 in San Francisco? Bullshit. And they didn't even get the best one in SF. Invalid.

Though I'm sure msbelle's drink was tasty.

Those bars look delicious. I've been to a couple in Seattle but do t know why i haven't been to the others! Possibly because they aren't in my neighborhood. ;). But I have been to the one in Minneapolis, I met up with a friend there!

Thanks, guys. I think I'll offer $300 and hope that's not too cheap. I don't want to shortchange her, but this trip is already costing us a fortune...

3 in New Orleans, though, that sounds about right.

Awesome cocktails sounds great! Well done, Tom Scola.

Me, I got home from work, ready to feed/walk the dog and then run out to dinner with some friends--to discover disastrous dog digestive failure ALL OVER the house. Well, no, not all over, because she missed the ceramic tile floor in the kitchen and instead hit the two newest carpets, multiple times.

So, no dinner with friends for me. Instead I spent half an hour cleaning disgusting things off the floor, opened a bottle of wine, and ate some vegetable gyoza from TJs. Not quite the same thing.

I am still recovering from surgery, but man, I am wiped out at the end of each day, and yet I wake up at 3 AM. Bah.
