If you take sexual advantage of her, you're going to burn in a very special level of hell. A level they reserve for child molesters and people who talk at the theater.

this mess was yours / now your mess is mine

I recently learned that, depending on the accounting system used, the obligation can be based on when you get paid, not when you did the work.

I was just about to post that! I heard back from a Finance guy at the AMA a little bit ago. I started work halfway through November and was paid for November in December; that check was less than $600. My December invoice was paid in 2014, and their 1099s are for money paid within a calendar year, not money earned. So December is always on the following year's 1099. Since my total 2013 earnings were less than $600, they aren't required to issue a 1099, so that's why I didn't get one.

Other clients have always given me a 1099, even for amounts less than $600, but I guess if the AMA doesn't legally have do, then they don't.

Problem solved.

brillig

Am I the only person annoyed by the Thanks, Mom commercials on the Olympics? Didn't Dad do anything? There's another ad where you only see Dad supporting his daughter the figure skater. He's even the only one in the pictures. There have to be ads out there where both (heck, all) parents are supporting the kid. Or even an ad where the parents are doing something nice for the sibling who's a little resentful of all the work and attention the Olympic hopeful is getting.

I should have gone into advertising.

Because books.

It's not about painting an accurate picture, Connie. It's about who buys the Procter & Gamble products for the household, which is still mostly women. They're appealing very directly to the women who will spend money on their laundry detergent and soap and whatever.

It doesn't make it less offensive, but I think most advertisements are slanted with money in mind and not much else.

The artist formerly associated with cupcakes.

Late to the FB discussion, but wow, I hope it is replaced by something else soon. I know that we, the users, are the product they're selling to the advertisers, but the "You want your posts seen by more people who already follow you? Let us show you our tiered pricing system" infuriates me.

In terms of social networking and marketing, Tumblr has been far more useful to me.

Why did Darth Vader cross the road? To get to the Dark Side!

In terms of social networking and marketing, Tumblr has been far more useful to me.

I should take note of that for my students' journal. Thanks for the tip.

Punishingly Intricate

My 15-year old niece was shocked that I knew what tumblr is when I was talking about it with her this weekend. And that I knew people other than 15 year old girls with Tumblr sites. She said she thought john green was the only non 15 year old girl with a Tumblr. (She was kind of joking.) She has a Tumblr but wouldn't reveal the name, at least while her mom was around. She did say the name was Harry Potter influenced. She's not doing anything untoward. She just wants it to be her private space, which her parents respect.

I don't really use Tumblr because it takes forever for stuff to load on my phone.

Fandom means never having to say "But where would I wear that?"

Timelies all!

Another unusually warm day here. Well, at least a large amount of the snow from last week has melted as a result.

That's the pain / That cuts a straight line down through the heart / We call it love

I should probably set up a tumblr for my library, shouldn't I?

Jesse the Jetsetter! I may have to ask you for recommendations for Reykjavik. Are you going to visit the hot springs?

ION, I hope everything is OK with our usual babysitter. She's usually quick with texts/emails, but she hasn't responded to either of my last two messages (sent about two weeks ago and then four days ago), so I'm uncertain what that means, except that she won't be watching our kid tomorrow night. So the last-minute scramble to find someone else begins...

We are Buffistas. This isn't our first apocalypse. -- Pix

Great, Dad got dizzy and nearly fell while out walking with the trainer today. No idea if he was dehydrated, low blood sugar, or just tired from the exercise.

... and this is why I'm both considering and not considering taking a job out of the area. Argh.

Oh Suela's dad! Take better care of yourself, man!!

I flew home late last night and went straight to the sleep center and did a study with the cpap. I now have a seemingly-ginormous machine (not actually, but when I think about the hassle of fitting it in my luggage???) to try to get used to. I really hope this like, magically makes me a morning person or some shit.
