Random note on remembering my trip to the Hallmark store: there are way too many cards with sound that are country songs. We don't even have a country station here full-time. How is there a market for that where I live?
ION, I requested the assistance of volunteers from a group called Cando (Can Do) who specialize in working with special needs populations to help me with my weekly special needs volunteers. It was AWESOME. The weekly volunteers suddenly had one on one supervision and socializing. The Cando kids had fun, the volunteers were animated and also on task, and the volunteer staff that came with were relieved to be able to step back and flit between individuals and not have to worry about anyone being left alone. We were able to tackle tasks that I ordinarily wouldn't trust them with due to supervision constraints.
At the end, the volunteer supervisors were smiling, the weekly volunteers were demanding that they come back every week, and the volunteer staff jumped out of the van to give them all a very thankful handshake.
This isn't even something they're interested in for their careers (working with SN pops) but that they need volunteer hours, and this is how they decided to spend it.
I'll be sad to see them have to go back to school. But as an experiment, it was phenomenal.
