I've never had a box spring. I suppose I've slept on them in hotels.

Sorry about the ankle, Dana. Injuries suck.
I also have a skinned ankle and knee. I want a lollipop and a juice box. And some stickers.
You deserve them!
An air mattress on one of those ikea slat frames was about the most comfortable bed I've had. If it would stay inflated better, but that was in the days before the self inflating ones. One caveat - you don't want it directly on the floor because it gets really cold.
How high off the floor do people have their beds? I'm too old to have to hoist myself up in the morning.
Sorry, Dana. Ankles are tricksy.
I finally got the Christmas tree down and all the holiday stuff put away. It's nice to have that space back in the living room.
I don't find air mattresses comfortable. Either they are so firm that I feel like I'm bouncing off of them or I slosh around in my tossing and turning. Either way, not comfortable. Waterbeds, also not good for me. I have a regular mattress on a slat bed now, and it's fine, and I slept on futons for years contentedly.

High enough for the dog to get under it. Because he will get under it, especially if there are loud noises, and if it's too low he'll get stuck.
In terms of cost, a mattress/box spring set with the free metal frame from the store is usually less expensive than a good wooden platform bed. In terms of moving into any NYC apartment, a queen size box spring probably won't fit up the stairs.
I recently upgraded our mattress with a 3" memory foam topper, and now I can't imagine how we ever slept on anything else. I lurve it.
