Now let us crush something soft and watch it fountain blood. That is a girlish thing to want to do, yes?

I'm flopped out on the couch with a cold, so my one beer is likely to go unfinished. As is any idea of NYE plans, which I'm actually totes okay with.

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

I'm drinking a gin toddy, all Christmas Carol-like.

In the last week I've exposed both of my children to the Firefly pilot.

Emmett's take: "There's only 13 episodes? Why?! This is good!"

Matilda's take: "Is that her [Inara's] boyfriend? [JZ tries to find an appropriate way to discuss a Companion]

Matilda: "So she has a lot of boyfriends?"

(Also, lesson learned. Matilda is not ready to watch Firefly.)

Why did Darth Vader cross the road? To get to the Dark Side!

I had a glass of wine at dinner, but forgot to post. And then made sure kids were packed for quick NYE visit to HMB.

And then checked heads for lice. I have become the mom who checks her kids' heads for lice 2X a week. Because there's an outbreak every year, and it usually hits our house, and I'm tired of it. I do wonder if the cure is worse than the disease sometimes (usually the times when I decide we need to do a thorough combing instead of just a casual check).

"I keep to a strict diet of ill-advised enthusiasm and heartfelt regret." Leigh Bardugo

I had a maple pecan porter. It was, as ever, not quite mapley enough.

"Faded like the lilac, he thought."

That sounds fabulous, though.

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

It was, as ever, not quite mapley enough.

The answer to this problem is, I suspect, on your shelf next to the pancake mix.

Calli: My people have a saying. A man who trusts can never be betrayed, only mistaken.Avon: Life expectancy among your people must be extremely short.

As a kid, down on Olvera Street, my Dad used to buy me maple sugar candy, that was pure molded maple sugar in the form of maple donkeys and maple men & women and maple rabbits and maple ducks. Can't get much maplier than that. Don't know if anyone but a little kid can stand something that sweet.

I remember those candies, Typo.
