They sell raw sugar cane at some of the markets in New Orleans. A few of my friends in college told me that they grew up near sugar plantations, and they'd break off a bit of cane from the plants near the road and "have a chew" while they were walking to school.
They day after Christmas and I have no voice. My throat hurt and no one is home to tend me. I was even out in the world this morning and didn't pick up and cough drops.
